Anouk de Clercq : from reality to reality

Today, we had the opportunity to meet the video artist Anouk de Clercq. It was very exciting to meet her and see her work in better conditions that on her website. I have worked with 3D animation before i knew her but when i saw her work it was a kind of revelation. I really felt and still know i really feel connected to her world and preoccupations.

She started to show us a documentary of Werner Herzog : Eats his shoes – which was a funny starting point for a rainy day. Then, we watched few of her video works as Whoosh inspired by the human / machine interaction and which is still linked with the traditional experimental film from the 20th c.

After, she presented Sonar (2001), Petit palais (2002) and Building (2003) which are video animation realised with 3D Studio Max. Petit Palais and Building are linked with architecture while Portal (2002) and the following Here (2003) and Kernwasser wunderland (2004) are linked with inner landscape. There is like an evolution from very graphical and straight shapes to something more soft and organic. It’s really like if we come from total abstraction to the desire of re-link reality.

I was also interested to know her advice about real-time animation. And her experience with Game of mobile force (2001) wasn’t that persuasive for her. The non-mastery aspect of real-time can be frustrating as the limited talk of its interactive aspect.

We finished by discussing about Here is there (2006) her collaborative project with Anton Aeki ad Heidi Voet developed in Beijing. And it was really interesting to see the evolution of her inspiring source. From the inside world to the outside world. From her first video works till now there is like a loop passing through a complete dis-connected universe. No straight line to reality.
