Contexte

En 2011, le port de Bruges-Zeebruges est un des ports majeurs d’Europe, délivrant plus de 50 millions de tonnes sur le continent. Pourtant, après un premier âge d’or qui dûra jusqu’au 15e siècle, le port connût une première mort au 16e s, suite à l’ensablement du Zwin. Les travaux de développement qui s’achevèrent en 1985 et la croissance économique liée à la mondialisation ont permis au port de connaître un second essor, avec une croissance du traffic de 11% en 2010.

Dans ce contexte, « De la persistance des choses » traite du monde en changement et du désir d’immuabilité.

Permanentia
Dispositif d’encrage mémoriel

Permanentia tente de grâver des éléments du présent dans la mémoire visuelle en vue de conserver leur existence sur un certain nombre d’individu.

Le dispositif vise à préserver des éléments paysagés du port de Bruges-Zeebruges, zone de trafic fluvial potentiellement sensible aux variations économiques, climatiques et environnementales à court ou moyen terme.

Permanentia consiste en une installation avec projection d’image sur support phosphorescent et utilisant le principe de la persistance rétinienne. Les images sont projetées à tour de rôle sur l’écran qui absorbe et réfléchit la lumière, renvoyant le spectre de l’image projetée. Les individus visitant l’installation, sont invités à garder les images diffusées dans leur mémoire.

Viewpoint
Parcours de points de vue de paysages éphémères.

Viewpoint emmène à la découverte de lieux voués au changement dans un monde qui évolue à une vitesse exponentielle. Malgré la lenteur des effets immédiats sur le paysage, ceux-ci ne tarderont pas à s’accélérer.

Afin de les garder en mémoire, le parcours de points de vue vous invite à la contemplation de lieux en voie d’extinction.

Viewpoint consiste en une carte indiquant différents points de vue le long du port de Bruges-Zeebruges. La carte, basée sur Google map, est redessinnée en noir et blanc. Elle peut être imprimée et présentée pliée pour une utilisation in situ, mais elle peut aussi être présentée en tant qu’impression grand format ou peinture murale.

Translucent is an in situ installation presented as a «trompe l’oeil» in an empty rectangular room. It extends the space in an evanescent landscape, appearing and disappearing in an organic rhythm, like a mirage in a deserted location.

The work is based on a series of pictures taken in the industrial haven of Gent. Detached from their original location they are combined in a phantasmagorical vision where light has a determinant role. The luminous effects are enhanced by the use of reflective pigments while the mixing and fading of the images is aleatory so that the experience is always singular and renewed.

Translucent has been produced for Resonant Frequencies, a Threeplusone collective project at the Oude Nijverheidschool during the Open Atelier, Gent 2010.
With Hallveig Ágústsdóttir (Is), Marie-Laure Delaby (Be), Juan Duque (Co), Sabrina Harri (Fi), Yannick Franck (Be) and Melissa Mabesoone (Be).

I took this opportunity to develop a site specific installation in the city itself: a luminous sound painting that people would have to activate by the use of a torch lamp. I found a very nice and dark location at Krommewal brug, an abandoned house hidden by trees, invisible from the bridge.

For the painting intervention, I used phosphorescent pigments to highlight the traces of ancient paint on the bricks and to emphasize the blocked doors and windows of the house. Then, I integrated photo-resistors on the wall that will be connected to an Arduino for sound interaction.

The sound interaction has been developed by Jari Suominen (Fi), participating artist in the Summercamp. He produced custom-made melodies for the location that could be mixed randomly by the public.

During the Summercamp Presentation Day, the public was invited to wait until dark (around 22:45) to discover the installation. They were gathered in little groups and given a torch lamp to explore the location. By enlightening the wall of the house, they activated the phosphorescent paint and the sound through the photo-resistors integrated in the bricks. The exploration of the site led them to an enchanted and melancholic experience of the past.

I will present a new version of Extensions, previously shown in Zebrastraat (version 1.0) and the B-Gallery (version 1.0) in Brussels. This time, the installation will bring face to face the black-box with projection and flash-lights, and a projection on painting. This last part has been upgraded with some programming (Processing) during the Code, Arts & Crafts workshops organized by iMAL in Brussels. The animation is more organic and works as a close system independent from the interaction with the flash-lights.

Buiten Smedenvest 1 -8000 Brugge

The aim of the residency was to create new site-specific works, directly inspired from this old laboratory, and connected with the idea of “extension”, coming from certain questions that we wanted to raise, such as: How to extend a media with another?, How to extend an image into a space?, How to extend a space into a media?

Starting from that, I chose one of the rooms available in Zennestraat 17: the one completely painted in black during the last exhibition, except for a white frame. This room was especially made to welcome a projection… and suited to one of the works I wanted to achieve: a hybrid installation where outside light interfere with the inner lights of the image. A complete auto-sufficient system that the public could only look at and not interact with.

From this process, results an empirical dialog between  two flickering phenomenons, a tensed experience with a constantly appearing/disappearing image, touching nearly the state of film, but remaining always a still, questioning ourselves on the reality of the space, the image and the experience that we are living.

For Expanded-Scapes (Leopoldskazerne, Ghent, 2009), I have shown recent works on generic spaces. Using maps and construction sites as underlying ground-works of the generic template, I create improbable spaces where imaginary/virtual flows (traffic, circulation, communication, economic exchanges) are the only inhabitants.
